AlphaEdge: Using artificial intelligence for the future of energy

The Graz-based start-up AlphaEdge forecasts the output of solar and wind power plants. The technology combines data from satellite images and IoT sensors.

The Graz-based start-up AlphaEdge is set to revolutionize the energy market with a groundbreaking innovation: a platform that enables energy companies to accurately predict the performance of renewable energy plants using solar and wind power. The AlphaEdge technology combines data from satellite imagery, IoT sensors and models from transmission system operators to achieve unprecedented accuracy in power forecasting. The young company is supported by the European Space Agency´s Business Incubation Center (BIC) in Austria and benefits from the “ESA Spark Funding Austria” programme.

“The challenge with renewable energies is that their availability fluctuates greatly - wind and solar intensity often change in real time,” explains founder Riccardo Mercanti. “Our platform is specifically designed to predict these fluctuations and thus create a reliable planning basis for wind and solar plant operators.”

The full power of AI

AlphaEdge uses the full power of artificial intelligence and machine learning to recognize patterns in data and create precise forecasts. “These forecasts help operators to manage their systems more efficiently, plan maintenance optimally and minimize energy losses. By accessing historical and real-time data, the system can make precise predictions for the coming hours and days,” explains Managing Director Mercanti.

Successful pilot projects and great interest from industry

The platform is currently being tested by several European energy suppliers: “The response from the industry has been positive,” says Mercanti. “We keep hearing from our pilot customers how much confidence they are gaining in the stability of their systems thanks to the precise forecasts.”

With its innovative solution, AlphaEdge could fundamentally change the operation of wind and solar parks - an important step on the way to a sustainable, climate-friendly energy supply.

About ESA Spark Funding Austria

ESA Spark Funding Austria is a funding program implementedin collaboration with ESA and the Austrian Aeronautics and Space Agency (FFG/ALR). Austrian companies received zero-equity funding of € 55,000.00 to integrate space technology or space assets/services into existing product lines or create entirely new products/services. Science Park Graz implemented the first call between 2021-2023, and the second one between 2023-2025.
