At GATE Space, we develop green, chemical in-space propulsion solutions for the NewSpace economy. Drawing on years of experience developing rocket engines, our team is chasing the dream of a thriving economy in space and tackling space engineering problems with a rapid prototyping philosophy. We focus on the development of two products: The GATE Jetpack – a plug-and-play mobility solution for satellite missions – and the GATE Thruster – the world’s first chemical propulsion system capable of highly responsive deep throttling and differential thrust stabilization.

About your role

As part of a small, passionate team of engineers, you will contribute to our success by developing and optimizing the avionics subsystem of the GATE Jetpack and the GATE Thruster. 

Your primary tasks: 

  • Development of avionics and ground support electronics (requirement analysis, specification, design, prototyping, debugging, testing and manufacturing)
  • Design of schematics and PCB layouts for analog, digital and power electronics
  • Assembly, bring-up, testing and debugging of PCBs
  • Design and manufacturing of wire harnesses
  • Development of firmware
  • Integration of avionics systems into GATE Jetpack and GATE Thruster
  • Interdisciplinary coordination and collaboration with your teammates
  • Documentation of the product development

  • Proficiency in design of schematics and PCB layouts for analog, digital and power electronics and EDA software
  • Proficiency in bring-up, testing and debugging of PCBs using standard lab equipment

Beneficial qualities:

  • Applied engineering experience (e.g. internships, job experience, personal or team projects)
  • Experience in the design for EMC and the space environment (radiation, thermal, mechanical)
  • Experience in manual and reflow soldering, board assembly and rework 
  • Experience in the development of bare-metal firmware in C/C++
  • Experience in the usage of communication busses (e.g. CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, RS-485)
  • Familiarity with applicable ECSS and other avionics design and testing standards
  • Familiarity with mechanical design and MCAD
  • Familiarity with the design of control systems
  • Familiarity with Git version control
  • Familiarity with Python and/or Rust
